At 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 14, the United Auto Workers’ labor agreements with the Big Three automakers expire. At the center of the fight is a battle for better pay, more paid time off, improved benefits and greater job security.
As the deadline nears, UAW President Shawn Fain continues to publicly call out each proposal, with Stellantis’ dubbed “trash” and General Motors’ considered “insulting.” He said all the proposals from GM, Ford and Stellantis offer significantly less generous wages and benefits than the UAW is demanding.
“I want to be clear. We want a deal. We’re ready for a deal,” Fain said. But ”we aren’t going to lay down and take whatever scraps they give us.”
Below are the events that have happened so far, leading up to the contract deadline.
