Dive Brief:
- Stellantis is recalling up to 1,033,433 vehicles to fix a problem where the rearview camera can fail to display on the vehicle’s infotainment screen, according to a June 13 filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- The recalled vehicles include: the 2021-2022 Dodge Durango; 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacifica; Jeep Grand Cherokee L; 2022 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500; 2022-2023 Jeep Compass, Grand Cherokee, Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer; and Ram Promaster vehicles.
- The problem is related to radio software, which may prevent the rearview camera signal from passing through to the media screen when putting the vehicle in reverse.
Dive Insight:
The recall is required since the impacted vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111 for "Rear Visibility."
The camera software fault was first discovered on some model year 2022 Ram 1500 pickups that were produced from April 13, 2021 through Nov. 26, 2022. But the total number of other vehicles with the fault was determined using vehicle manufacturing records.
Other Stellantis vehicles not included in the current recall were built with radios that do not contain the suspect software.
The fix involves updating the radio software in the vehicle, free of charge. However, the fix requires a service visit to a dealer instead of issuing an over-the-air software update, which Tesla was able to do for many of its prior recalls since its electric vehicles are software-based, including for the 125,000 EVs the company recalled on May 28.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed to customers by August 2.
