Antonio Filosa will take over as CEO of Stellantis effective June 23, the automaker announced Wednesday.
The 25-year company veteran and current COO for the Americas and chief quality officer was the unanimous selection of the automaker’s board following a six-month search. The CEO search was led by Executive Chairman John Elkann, who has managed the automaker's daily operations following the resignation of Carlos Tavares, who departed the company in December amid falling sales and revenues.
Elkann, who will continue as executive chairman, said Filosa’s understanding of the company and the industry “equip him perfectly for the role of chief executive officer in this next and crucial phase of Stellantis’ development.”
“I have worked closely with Antonio over the past six months during which time his responsibilities have increased, and his strong and effective leadership spanning both North and South America at a moment of unprecedented challenge have confirmed the excellent qualities he brings to the role,” Elkann said in the announcement.
Filosa will take over a global automaker navigating turbulent economic conditions fueled by tariffs and an industry adapting to a growing consumer interest in electric vehicles.
But improving Stellantis’ finances will be a priority for Filosa. The automaker reported Q1 revenues fell 14% year-over-year due to weak sales and price discounting.
Growing vehicle sales is a strength of Filosa, who as CEO of Jeep expanded the brand’s global presence, including in Europe where its models continue to be among Stellantis’ best-selling vehicles, per the release.
Filosa was promoted to COO for the Americas in December where Stellantis said he initiated the strengthening of its U.S. operations, including significantly reducing excessive dealer inventory, reorganizing the leadership team, driving the process to introduce new products and powertrains, and increasing dialogue with dealers, unions and suppliers.
Filosa in a statement said he is grateful for the confidence Elkann and the company’s board have in him.
“I have always been inspired by the immense talent, passion and commitment of our people at Stellantis and the power of trusting our teams to achieve excellence,” he said. “We have the world’s best and most iconic brands in automotive history and an over 100-year heritage of innovation. That legacy, combined with our relentless dedication to giving our customers the products and services they love, will continue to be key to our success.”
