Ford sold about 2 million vehicles in the U.S. last year, with trucks and vans accounting for over half the automaker’s sales at nearly 1.1 million units. Its F-Series pickup line retained its crown as the best-selling truck in the U.S. for the 47th consecutive year, with sales of 750,789 units in 2023, a 14.8% year-over-year increase.
Although Ford has scaled back its 2024 EV plans in response to lower market demand, its annual EV sales increased 17.9% to nearly 26,000 units, with sales of the electric F-150 Lightning up 54.7% in 2023 to 24,165 units. In addition, sales of the automaker’s hybrid vehicles are also on the rise. Ford sold 37,229 hybrid vehicles in Q4, a jump of 55% from the year before.
For the full year, Ford’s hybrid vehicle sales were up over 25% led by the Maverick pickup, which sold 52,361 units, an increase of 67%. Sales of the F-150 Hybrid pickup jumped 41% from a year ago to 50,103 vehicles. Ford sold a total of 133,743 hybrid vehicles in 2023.
“We saw strong gains coming from gas-powered vehicles and record setting sales for our hybrid and electric vehicles,” said Andrew Frick, president, Ford Blue, in a press release.
German automaker Volkswagen also reported a strong sales year in the U.S. for 2023. The automaker’s sales increased by 9.3% compared to 2022, with sales of 329,029 vehicles. In Q4, the automaker’s sales jumped by 39.9% YoY.
Leading Volkswagen’s U.S. sales were the Tiguan long wheel base, Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs. The LWB version of the Tiguan was the automaker’s best-selling model, with more than 20,000 units sold, but sales declined 13.9% YoY. Atlas sales increased 13.7% YoY and the Atlas Cross Sport by 22.2%. Combined sales of both Atlas models totaled 95,675 vehicles.
Sales of Volkswagen’s fully electric ID.4 SUV also grew in 2023 with sales growing 84.2% YoY to 37,789, up from 20,511 in 2022.
Eight other automakers, including General Motors, Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Mazda, Subaru and Mitsubishi, reported strong fourth-quarter and full-year sales in the U.S. to finish out 2023.
Ford rival GM reported sales of 2.6 million vehicles in 2023, a 14% increase from 2022.
